Introduction

THORChain (ERC20) — often called ETH.RUNE — is the Ethereum-based representation of RUNE, the native utility token powering the THORChain protocol. It was created as a transitionary asset to bridge early users into the THORChain ecosystem before native RUNE was available.

THORChain was first conceived in 2018 during the Binance Dexathon, a developer hackathon, by an anonymous team. The project published its first whitepaper in 2018 and raised $1.5 million in an initial DEX offering (IDO) in 2019.

How THORChain (ERC20) Works

ETH.RUNE is a standard ERC-20 smart contract on Ethereum. It was designed purely as a transitionary asset — a temporary representation of RUNE that could be held and traded on Ethereum before being upgraded to native RUNE on the THORChain L1.

Underneath, the THORChain protocol itself operates as a cross-chain automated market maker (AMM). It uses continuous liquidity pools (CLPs) where RUNE pairs with every other asset. When a user swaps Asset A for Asset B, the protocol executes two trades: first swapping A for RUNE, then RUNE for B — enabling permissionless cross-chain swaps without bridges or wrapped tokens.

RUNE is the economic backbone of the THORChain protocol. It serves as the settlement asset in every liquidity pool, meaning all pools pair a non-RUNE asset with RUNE. Node operators must bond RUNE to participate in securing the network, creating demand tied directly to network activity.

The protocol's incentive model aims for $3 of locked RUNE for every $1 of non-RUNE assets in pools — aligning RUNE's demand with the total value secured. All swap fees are collected and distributed in RUNE, giving liquidity providers and node operators a yield tied to real protocol usage.
