What are BRC-20 tokens?

BRC-20 tokens are an experimental fungible-token standard for Bitcoin created by @domodata in March 2023.
They use the Ordinals protocol to inscribe JSON text onto individual satoshis, defining ticker, supply, and transfer rules.
There are no smart contracts; balance state is tracked by off-chain indexers that parse these inscriptions.

How It Works (Simple Flow)

  1. Mint – inscribe {"p":"brc-20","op":"mint","tick":"ORDI","amt":"1000"} on a sat.
  2. Transfer – inscribe {"p":"brc-20","op":"transfer","tick":"ORDI","amt":"100"} then send that sat to the recipient.
  3. Indexer – scans Bitcoin blocks and builds a ledger of who owns how many tokens.
