What are BRC-20 tokens?
BRC-20 tokens are an experimental fungible-token standard for Bitcoin created by @domodata in March 2023.
They use the Ordinals protocol to inscribe JSON text onto individual satoshis, defining ticker, supply, and transfer rules.
There are no smart contracts; balance state is tracked by off-chain indexers that parse these inscriptions.
How It Works (Simple Flow)
- Mint – inscribe
{"p":"brc-20","op":"mint","tick":"ORDI","amt":"1000"}on a sat. - Transfer – inscribe
{"p":"brc-20","op":"transfer","tick":"ORDI","amt":"100"}then send that sat to the recipient. - Indexer – scans Bitcoin blocks and builds a ledger of who owns how many tokens.
Key Differences vs. ERC-20
| Feature | BRC-20 | ERC-20 |
|---|---|---|
| Chain | Bitcoin | Ethereum |
| Smart contracts | ❌ (JSON inscriptions) | ✅ (EVM bytecode) |
| Gas token | BTC | ETH |
| Balance state | Off-chain indexer | On-chain contract |
| Wallet | Ordinal-aware (UniSat, Xverse) | Any ETH wallet |
First & Famous Tokens
- ORDI – the first BRC-20; max supply 21 million; listed on Binance, OKX.
- SATS – 1000× smaller units; largest by market cap.
- RATS, PEPE, MEME – meme-themed; often see 100× pumps during Bitcoin fee spikes.
Benefits
- Bitcoin-native – secured by Proof-of-Work; no separate blockchain.
- Simple – no complex smart-contract logic;任何人都能 mint 或转移。
- Market creation – new trading pairs, airdrops, and speculative opportunities.
- Fee revenue – increased demand for Bitcoin block space benefits miners.
Drawbacks & Risks
- Indexer reliance – if indexers disagree, ledger forks; no on-chain enforcement.
- Chain bloat – millions of inscriptions raise BTC fees and UTXO set size.
- No DeFi – no lending, DEX, oracles; only OTC or centralized trading.
- Experimental – standard can change; early projects may become obsolete.
- Scam risk – easy to clone ticker; verify inscription number and deployer.

Final Thoughts
BRC-20 brings fungible tokens to Bitcoin without smart contracts.
It’s simple, speculative, and indexer-dependent—more akin to “Bitcoin NFTs that act like coins” than true ERC-20 rivals.
If indexer consensus and tooling mature, BRC-20 could become the default meme-token layer for BTC; until then, treat it as an experimental playground.
