How Babylon Works

A key innovation is Bitcoin Checkpointing: PoS chain events are timestamped on the Bitcoin mainnet, protecting against Long-Range Attacks and improving PoS security. This also enables Babylon Genesis' fast unbonding, reducing the typical 21-day Cosmos unbonding period to approximately 2 days.

Tokenomics

BABY serves three core functions on Babylon Genesis: paying transaction and smart contract fees, providing governance voting power for on-chain parameter changes, and acting as a staking reward mechanism for network security.

The protocol uses an 8% annual inflation model, split between BTC stakers and BABY stakers. Governance is exclusively exercised by BABY holders — BTC stakers do not vote directly. A dual-staking model also exists, where combining BTC staking and BABY staking together unlocks co-staking rewards.
